Hello guys,

I'm facing some issues with 2 Citrix servers cannot get the latest Cumulative Updates. They get installed until 99% and then roll back with the error "Windows couldn't install updates undoing changes" and reboots. Checked the build number afterwards and both have the 2019-02 CU installed.

  • Checked EventViewer and the error message seems to be 0x800f0922.
  • Checked services and App Readiness, Windows Update and Update Orchestrator were started and set on automatic
  • Made sure that .Net Framework is installed, checked System Partition and both had 31% Free Disk Space (~150-160mb)
  • Tried to install 2019-03 CU manually and got the same results
  • Both have 20 GB Free Disk Space on C:\
  • Windows Update agent was reset
  • DISM Repair and sfc run was used -> No corruption found
  • Performance counters were reset
  • SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 folders were renamed
  • Ran Windows Updater Troubleshooter
I'm literally out of ideas other than reinstalling the imaging which will upset the customer(backups, restores, reconfigure etc.)

Thank you in advance!
Adrian

Hi there, @K3nSter , and welcome to the forums!

According to Cumulative Update for Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview 5: April 27, 2016 you can also try to grab the update yourself via the Microsoft Update Catalog - Is that what you tried when you tried manually? The reason I ask is that link also points directly to the KB articles themselves, and you could try installing each KB individually to see which particular one might be giving you issues, and then troubleshoot from there.

None of them would install? Now, that is ... odd.

How about creating a test user name with admin rights, and trying from that account?

I initially assumed it was one of the KB updates that was causing the entire CU to fail - but now it sounds like something else is going on.

Also - are these VMs?

Unfortunately not.

These were tried using a Domain Admin account. Creating another one will help?

Yes, these are Windows Server 2016 build 1607 VMs

I'm wondering if there is something crazy going on reminiscent of Windows 10 profile hubris that has happened in the past. So I thought maybe making another account might help.

But if they are VMs, and even a single one will not install individually, then my next idea of temporarily increasing the VHD size by about 5 - 10 GB probably won't do anything.

And you have the previous updates that have come up until April?

That may be the issue. So, does that KB appear twice (or the OS Build, for that matter)?

Maybe try uninstalling that one and seeing if you can move forward with Windows Update - it should catch you back up then.
