Dism shows you need cleanup
Did you run "Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup" after?
I did not ditto. I have held back from executing that particular command, just at the moment.
What I became more interested in, was why the DISM process only showed 99.1% complete - was this due to file corruption?
So, instead I ran Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth , and that showed no errors. Then I ran sfc /scannow, and that showed errors with .NET framework which were eventually repaired.
Finally, I re-ran Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore , and this time the process reached 100.0% complete - suggesting to me that file corruption was indeed the problem at the start.

1610737371561.png

Only now the Component Store is showing 2 reclaimable packages, which I did not have on the first Analysis. Could it be the Reclaimable Packages are something to do with repairing file corruptions?

The tool still recommended that I cleanup the Component Store - but why does DISM only recommend store cleanup when reclaimable packages exist?

Surely, these packages serve a purpose?

I have coded a batch script that will clean up the component store in Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.

Code:
:: Clean Up the WinSxS Folder

@Echo off

net sess>nul 2>&1||(powershell start cmd -ArgumentList """/c %~0""" -verb Runas & exit)

Cls & Mode CON  LINES=12 COLS=80 & Color 1E & Title Created by FREEBOOTER

Reg QUERY "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion" /v ProductName | find /i "Windows 8" >Nul
If Not Errorlevel 1 (
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase
) Else (
Reg QUERY "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion" /v ProductName | find /i "Windows 8.1" >Nul

Strange situation after updating six machines (some x86, some x64, some Home, others Pro) to CU KB4598242 (19042.746). As usual after the update I use Disk Clean-up to clean up system files, none of then showed any Windows Updates to be cleaned up, neither did Settings > Storage.

Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore also said that there was nothing to clean up....

Number of Reclaimable Packages : 0
Component Store Cleanup Recommended : No

Despite that, running Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup reclaimed some 2.5GB. Presumably nether Storage or Disk Clean-up could offer to clean up windows updates as it was incorrectly being reported that there were none to clean up.

HaHa :ROFLMAO: Just because Windows does NOT recommend Store Cleanup - doesnt mean you can't!

That is true - but this is the first time I've ever seen it NOT recommend a clean up after a CU. That surely must be an error in the way MS delivered this particular CU.

Just a thought ..., if the computer already has the updates installed, then the CU does not get installed. Perhaps similarly, if the CU is installed and the superseded packages are already uninstalled ... :unsure: ...
