Browsers and Mail Hide or Show Quick Links on New Tab Page in Microsoft Edge

Microsoft_Edge.jpeg

Microsoft has adopted the Chromium open source project in the development of Microsoft Edge on the desktop to create better web compatibility. This new Microsoft Edge runs on the same Chromium web engine as the Google Chrome browser, offering you best in class web compatibility and performance.

The new Chromium based Microsoft Edge is supported on all versions of Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows Server (2016 and above), Windows Server (2008 R2 to 2012 R2), and macOS.

By default, when you open a new tab (Ctrl+T) in Microsoft Edge, you see a Bing search bar, Bing image of the day as the background, quick links as tiles of your most visited sites, and Bing news content visible to scroll.

Microsoft Edge will automatically add quick links of websites you visit to the new tab page. You can remove, rename, or add new quick links as wanted.

This tutorial will show you how to hide or show quick links on the new tab page in the Chromium based Microsoft Edge.

OPTION THREE

Enable or Disable "NewTabPageQuickLinksEnabled" on New Tab Page by Default for All Users using a REG file

You must be sign in as an administrator to do this option.

This option uses the NewTabPageQuickLinksEnabled policy to hide or allow quick links on the new tab page in Microsoft Edge.

If you enable or don't configure this policy, Microsoft Edge displays quick links on the new tab page, and the user can interact with the control, turning quick links on and off. Enabling this policy does not force quick links to be visible - the user can continue to turn quick links on and off.

If you disable this policy, Microsoft Edge hides quick links on the new tab page and disables the quick links control in the NTP settings flyout. In my experience, the user can temporarily turn quick links on and off, but quick links will still always hide by default.

The downloadable .reg files below will add and modify the DWORD value in the registry key below.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge

NewTabPageQuickLinksEnabled DWORD

(delete) = Default
0 = Hide quick links by default

1 Do step 2 (enable) or step 3 (disable) below for what you would like to do.

2 To Enable "NewTabPageQuickLinksEnabled" to Allow Quick Links on New Tab Page in Microsoft Edge for All Users

This is the default setting.

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

Enable_NewTabPageQuickLinksEnabled_to_allow_quick_links_on_new_tab_page_in_Microsoft_Edge.reg

3 To Disable "NewTabPageQuickLinksEnabled" to Hide Quick Links on New Tab Page by Default in Microsoft Edge for All Users

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

Disable_NewTabPageQuickLinksEnabled_to_hide_quick_links_by_default_on_new_tab_page_in_Microsoft_Edge.reg

4 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

5 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

6 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

7 If Microsoft Edge is currently open, then close and reopen Microsoft Edge to apply.

8 You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink
