A friend ask me this question and I didn't have an answer for him.
He has a Apple computer running Parallels (like bootcamp) and Windows 10 VM.
He wanted to know if disk cleanup (or storage sense) or CCleaner or wisecleaner would damage his Apple
OS if he ran them in the VM. he wants to clear out the temp files and updates.
For me, well I never run them because I have a copy if anything goes wrong on an external drive.

He can take a snapshot of the VM before running disk cleanup utilities if anything goes bad he can restore the VM.

Using disk cleanup utilities won't cause any problem its registry cleaners that can cause problems with Windows OS not always but it does happen.

Anything you do in a VM won't affect the host in any way. The Windows VM is stored on a virtual disk, which in turn is stored on the MacOS filesystem. I am not 100% certain if you can use the Bootcamp partition directly though...but it should not make any difference. Only that partition is affected by Disk Cleanup anyways.

I think the confusing part here is Parallels Coherence Mode, which allows you to run Windows apps straight from the MacOS desktop. It looks like they are installed on your Mac FS while in reality they are run from the VM and the IO is redirected to the MacOS desktop. So instead of the whole Windows desktop being shown, you only see the app.

its been a while since I used CCleaner but i do believe you can choose folder and partitions to ignore or atleast limit the scope of the scans.

Using registry cleaners like rifles rather than shotguns work best, meaning such serve the users better if used for specific purposes. Such can be set to ignore things and/or to zero in on certain things. Disk cleaners normally behave pretty well. Do not wipe free space if the computer is background and foreground doing things. Wipe free space only when computer is doing absolute minimim of anything.

@thomaseg1 - good advice all around.

The key to pay attention to is what @slicendice mentions about the coherence mode, but since all of it is in a VM to begin with, theoretically, it should not make a difference (in terms of affecting the host MacOS).

Always a good idea to make a shapshot of the VM before manipulating it, though, as Freebooter mentions.

Well I bit the bullet and tried it out on my system (apple + Win10 VM) as I have several backups.
Disk clean worked and CCleaner, I haven't tried Wise cleaner yet.

I have no problem with them. Of course I am extremely careful on what is checked and deleted.
I even use the registry cleaner in CC, though I always save the deleted reg entries.

While I agree with @slicendice about CCleaner myself, and never advocate for n00bish users to use it, If you know what you're doing, go for it. And in all the interaction you've had with the forums here and 10F, etc., @thomaseg1, I know you know.

At least it worked out for ya.
